Do you like the Roger Miller classic hit King Of The Road?

I particularly like the lines: "Two hours of pushing broom...buys and eight by twelve four bit room"
That should read: "buys AN eight by twelve four bit room"

When I was little, my Uncle (by marriage) Freddie who was a car-salesman, played this on his stereo in his Man-Cave. This was the mid-to-late 60's. He owned a GM dealership and at the time, all the Major Record Labels were pushing this new thing called "Eight-Track Tape" (which could be added as an option to your new car) and would send car dealerships lots of "Demo" product so car-buyers could have music playing from their new-fangled players as they drove off the lot. One of those demos he played over and over was the Roger Miller one with "King of the Road" . That and "Chug-A-Lug" again and again. Anyhoo, I always knew there was a reason the grownups would laugh when "King of the Road" came on, but I would never really know of its full potency until I grew up. The guttural raspiness of his voice when he sings "I ain't got no cigarettes" cut a large groove through my right hemisphere that to this day still gapes. He was a genius.

Food Fit For Kings

Anyone who happens to love Mughlai food would surely have a favourite restaurant to swear by. And in addition to being an authority on the cuisine, people usually refuse to look beyond the one their favourite places. One side of the restaurant offers a panoramic view of the MG Road replete with the bustling traffic, imposing buildings and even the upcoming Metro. It’s amidst this setting that Zaffran proffers a cuisine that takes you back to the era of royalty from Awadh and Hyderabad. The handpicked items on the menu have been carefully selected from a list that consists of delicacies that nawabs have been feasting upon. Operational only for dinner, Zaffran’s ongoing Kebab festival takes the pleasure of enjoying a meal to new heights. Comprising of nothing short of a splendid array of kebabs, the festival menu is prepared by master chef Anwar Ahmed and is accompanied by a complimentary glass of wine or beer.

The special menu features traditional Indian kebabs in their full glory with tikkas, chops and seekhs getting a royal makeover. Served on a bed of greens most of the items on the kebab menu pack a punch and have generous portions. You might take a while in making up your mind but take our word when we suggest Gosht Pasanda; smeared with aromatic spices and marinated in curd. Adding to the revelry of the Kebab-e-Ghazal festival is a live performance of timeless classics that make the food more relishing. It’s not only the food that has a regal feel to it, the service and the hospitality of the restaurant also adds to the entire experience. The staff is courteous and treats you like descendants of some imperial bloodline!

Besides the special Kebab menu, Zaffran’s regular menu with soups, curries, vegetables and Biryanis is nothing short of a celebration in itself. The Murgh Jahangiri Shorba (shredded chicken soup), Baltee Murgh (red gravy based chicken) and the Tal Makhana (a kofta like concoction) come highly recommended. The Awadhi lineage of Zaffran comes alive in innovative kebabs like Kathal, Dalcha and Arbi but if there is one dish that is truly fantastic it would have be the Awadhi Nali Ghost. The perfect ambience, food meant for kings and festivities all around, Zaffran is just the right blend for an evening.
