i need to change the fuel gauge on a ford Taurus 1989 station wagon. any ideas? ?
i just bought a ford Taurus station wagon from a private party without first trying out the car and i am now noticing some problems on the car.
first of all, the fuel tank gauge does not work at all. is there anyone who is able to assist me in showing me how to fix it?
also, the steering wheel starts shaking (noticeably) as soon as i hit 40 mph. i think its the CV boots, but i am not sure. any ideas?
lastly, the headlights are really dim. any suggestions on how to replace them??
thanks a lot. any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Well your fuel gauge issue will probably be an expensive fix. Usually when the guage doesn't work its because there is a floater inside the tank that for some reason gave out. It is usually pretty expensive to fix because you have to drop the fuel tank and cut it open. My suggestion would be to leave it as is and just use your trip odometer to give you an idea of when you need to refuel.
As for the shaking at 40mph that usually is just the tires needing to be balanced. I would take it to a tire shop where they can balance it for you. It shouldnt cost you more than a few bucks to have that done. If tire balancing doesnt work then you can explore more possible reasons for it but its probably the tires out of balance. As for the headlights being dim you would just have to change out the bulbs. They should be pretty easy to change. Lift the hood and you should be able to pull the bulbs out through the back of the lights. Or you can always drive with the brights on. Good luck
The Ford Escort Over The Years
The Ford escort over the years, especially in North America, wore many different types of sheet-metal though all were aimed the compact market -- which prior to 1981 Ford had for all intents and purposes ignored. Beginning in that model year, however Ford introduced what it called "the world car" for the benefit of its customers in North America.
By and large, the compact Ford was successful right out of the gate and through the end of its life at the close of the 2003 model year, when it was supplanted by the new Focus. Originally created off the platform of a European model of the same name, it showed up in Ford showrooms sporting new sheetmetal and U. S. Technologies for its 1981 introduction.
Historically, the Escort was the first front-wheel-drive model offered by the Dearborn manufacturer, replacing the poorly-conceived and executed rear-wheel-drive Pinto, which suffered from several controversies at the time. By its second year, the Escort had become the best-selling vehicle in the United States and remained so for much of the eighties.
There were three different generations of Ford Escort sold in the North American market, with each one being an improvement over the other. Different body styles and options packages combined with a wide variety of four-cylinder engines and various transmissions over the years. There was even a small 52 horsepower diesel at one end and a turbocharged dynamo that could spool up to produce 120 horsepower at the other.
Over the course of the third and last generation, which lasted from 1997 through the end of 2002, engineers at Ford had managed to demonstrate a real facility with the design and manufacture of compact vehicles, managing to squeeze increasingly good performance and reliability from a variety of four-cylinder engines while also giving customers nice styling, especially for the relative low prices the Escort sold at.
Over the two-plus decades of the car's life, the Escort appeared in a variety of body styles. There was a hatchback sporting what Ford called "three doors, " and a station wagon model along with a couple of different performance sport coupes that first appeared on the scene back in 1998. The designers also kept up the car's appearance, freshening and redesigning it over the years.
Over its life, the Ford Escort played a vital part in keeping the car's Dearborn-based automaker alive and well. Keeping it in showrooms allowed the company to learn how to manufacture compact vehicles while simultaneously selling a great many of them to many a customer. This had the happy effect of keeping the Blue Oval on the minds of many consumers and for that reason alone, the Escort must be considered a success.
