Why Tank Cleaning Is Necessary
Tanks come in all different shapes and sizes and have often contained products including acids, alkaline, flammables and toxics. Often they are unsuitable for human entry, necessitating other methods of maintenance, like water jetting.
It is important that any form of tank cleaning is carried out by trained, certified experts using safe working practices. A risk assessment will need to be carried out to ascertain the correct cleaning process.
For some companies, a bespoke tank cleaning solution will be required due to the unusual nature of the tank and its content. Professional project planning and management significantly minimises the risks.
Where entry to a tank is required, extra measures are necessary to ensure the safety of all personnel. Confined space permits will need to be issued and tests carried out for contaminants. Specially trained teams of cleaners, under a qualified leader will be assigned to the tank. In a hazardous environment they will be issued with breathing equipment and MARS resuscitation equipment.
In years gone by, the removal of products from industrial tanks would simply have been allowed to drain into the ground, sewage system or local river. Now strict environmental legislation controls the disposal of industrial waste.
Once cleaning is complete, the waste will need to be removed safely and legally to ensure all environmental factors are considered. Hazardous residues, corrosive and volatile substances require particular care.
Tank cleaning companies often have their own fleet of vehicles especially designed to carry the waste in a safe environment. Different waste will require different forms of carriage. Barrel type tankers, high airflow units and liquid ring tankers are common for carrying industrial waste from tank cleaning. If acidic materials are being disposed of, lined tankers will be necessary to remove the waste.

If entry into the tank is required, an ideal opportunity exists to inspect the tank and offer any advice on repairs, renovations or expected life-span. Once your tank is clean, it can be re-used or decommissioned, or inspected and business or production can continue.
